Civil servant sacked for offensive posts about Hillborough

BROMSGROVE woman Louise Brookes whose brother Andrew was one of the 96 fans to lose their life at Hillsborough has welcomed the decision to sack a civil servant who made offensive changes to the disaster page on Wikipedia.

Francis Maude, Minister for the Government’s Cabinet office, confirmed on Tuesday (June 17) that a 24-year-old junior administrator had been dismissed for gross misconduct.

The civil servant who has not been named, was found responsible for making the posts from Government computers in 2012.

Mr Maude confirmed the internal investigation had now concluded, even though the identity of the person behind similar edits on Wikipedia in 2009 had not been identified, due to ‘substantial technical obstacles’ the minister added.

Speaking to The Standard this week, Ms Brookes said: “The main thing is he has been caught and dealt with and the important thing now is that we families can concentrate on the inquests and getting the truth and justice for our 96, as well as survivors of Hillsborough.”

The new inquests into the deaths of the 96 victims are currently taking place in Warrington.

In recent days Graham Mackrell, club secretary of Sheffield Wednesday at the time of the disaster which was responsible for the safety of the stadium, has been quizzed by lawyers speaking on behalf of the bereaved families.

This week the jury has also heard that conditions of the club’s safety certificate were breached on the day of the tragedy including keeping records for attendances.

The hearings continue.
