Sainsburys to replace derelict pub

A DERELICT former pub and restaurant could be converted into a Sainsbury's Local, the Standard can reveal.

Sainsbury's confirmed they had submitted plans to convert the former Lime Bar and Thai Brasserie, on Stourbridge Road into a smaller version of their supermarket model.

The restaurant has been closed since earlier this year having been revamped as a bar and brasserie since 2011 after the closure of the Hundred House pub on the site.

The supermarket company announced it had submitted a proposal to Bromsgrove District Council for a new convenience store which will exist inside the currently empty building.

And, if the go-ahead is given the new Sainsburys, which will serve as a top-up shopping store, will be open between 7am and 11pm and will offer a range of fresh products.

The company said the site would provide about 25 new part-time and full-time jobs for Bromsgrove residents.

And, once up and running it has also made plans to select a Bromsgrove charity which it will support through various fund-raising activities and volunteering work.

In the planning application, Sainsbury has applied to conduct work to update the outside of the building and car park.

Punch Taverns, who have leased the building, will continue to be responsible for the first floor and the area at the back of the building, off Broad Street.

In a letter to nearby residents, Andrew Manger, Sainsbury's acquisition surveyor, said they were committed to being a 'good neighbour' and 'making a positive difference to the community'.

A Sainsburys spokesperson said: "We have developed plans for a new convenience store and have submitted a planning application to the local council.

"We hope to hear the decision over the Summer."
