A BROMSGROVE man who has battled back from prostate cancer and the Solihull company he works for have raised £531 for the Rory the Robot campaign.

Aidan McSharry collected £300 and 130 employees at Couch Perry Wilkes amassed £231 for the drive which is aimed at raising £1.6million to pay for a surgical robot for the county’s centre of excellence for urology at Alexandra Hospital.

That will revolutionise the way prostate cancer patients are treated in the county as the technology will allow surgeons to remove tumours with more precision through five cuts around the prostate gland rather than open surgery. It means less blood loss, less pain after surgery, a lower risk of complications and recovery times will fall from up to 12 weeks to between three to four weeks.

Mechanical engineer Aidan was diagnosed with the disease in September and underwent an operation to remove his prostate last January.

He said: “I’ve now been given the all clear.

“I know how important a robot like this is and I wanted to do my bit to help.”

Fund-raising dress down Fridays have been run by Couch Perry Wilkes for two years and have raised more than £4,600 for good causes.

Employees are encouraged to suggest causes and Aidan suggested Rory the Robot after seeing it in The Standard.

Richard Wilson, associate director of Couch Perry Wilkes, said the company was delighted that we have been able to support the Rory the Robot appeal.”
