THE DISTRICT Council’s deputy leader, Coun Margaret Sherrey, will become the new leader of the Bromsgrove Conservative Group next month.

Coun Sherrey was voted in on Tuesday in a meeting of the town’s Tories.

She told The Standard although she had been in the deputy role for the last three years she had not taken anything for granted.

“Because of the time spent as deputy, I know I am capable - there are a lot of things to look at before I make any changes, including the cabinet and the committees.

“But I’m not going to make changes for the sake of it.

“I will do my best and work with the rest of the group and council to ensure we all do what’s best for Bromsgrove.”

Outgoing leader Coun Roger Hollingworth added: “She has been a good deputy and she will make a good leader.

“She is a very strong person and some people won’t yet have seen that.”

We revealed last month that Coun Hollingworth was stepping down in May to give the person who took over a year in the role before the election.

A new leader of the authority - either from the Conservatives, Labour or an independent - will be elected after a vote at the next full council meeting in May.
