BROMSGROVE MP Sajid Javid was named on Wednesday (April 8) as the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
It comes after Maria Miller decided to step down from the role following the much-publicised row about her expenses.
The promotion is Mr Javid’s third in just two years - in 2012 he was made the Econnomic Secretary to the Treasury and last year he became the Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
Mr Javid being given the role may have come as a surprise to some people, given his financial background and the fact some bookmakers on Wednesday morning were offering odds of 33-1 on him replacing Ms Miller.
Mr Javid told The Standard he was in New York on financial business for the Government on Wednesday morning and took the call from Prime Minister David Cameron in a baggage carousel at the airport.
“When I was offered the position, I was absolutely delighted.
“It’s not the best circumstances to get a promotion, but I’m pleased to be taking up the role.”
And he moved to reassure residents that, despite taking up a high profile position, his constituents would still be at the forefront of his work.
“It’s a huge privilege to serve as the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport but I will never forget that the only reason I have this opportunity is because of the faith the people of Bromsgrove have put in me by electing me.
“It’s always the case that the people of Bromsgrove are my priority because without them I would never have got this chance,” he added.
He said he was still getting used to the role and would be taking time over Easter to find out more about the new brief he has.
And, when we spoke to him yesterday (Thursday) we at The Standard thought it would be a good opportunity to quiz him on some of his culture, media and sport preferences.
