A CATSHILL Middle School student has two reasons to celebrate after winning both the Housman School Poetry Speaking Competition and the Housman Cup this week.

Ethan King competed against students from ten other schools in the final rounds at Artrix.

He read two dramatic poems including ‘Shot! So quick, so clean an ending?’ where judges said his understanding and delivery showed a maturity way beyond his years.

And, they added, when he performed Dwight Latham and Moe Jaffe’s ‘I am my own Grandpa’ he demonstrated his excellent memory and delivery skills.

During the event Ethan was also presented with the ‘Best Overall Reader’ of the day.

The 12-year-old was also invited to read a poem at a special commemorative celebration of the birth of John Adam at the new memorial in St John’s Cemetery last Wednesday (March 26).

The event was well-attended, by around 50 guests, and ended with a buffet lunch which was prepared and hosted by Bromsgrove School in the old chapel where Housman used to worship as a boy.

Jim Page, the chairman of the Bromsgrove Society, said: “Ethan impressed everybody - his second poem was a very complicated one.

“He learnt it totally by heart and he just reeled it off, it was very impressive.”
