THE NEW Cycle South Brum project will be officially launched today (Saturday) in Northfield.
To mark the marvellous occasion, a funday will be held in Price's Square (by the Post Office) from 10am to 3pm.
Bike Right will be running a Dr Bike surgery to get bikes back on the road, there will be a smoothie-making bike to promote healthy eating and the Centro Bus will be there to provide lots of support to get South Birmingham residents back on the saddle.
New members to Cycle South Brum will also be entered into a prize draw.
It comes after the Northfield Community Partnership, Northfield Business Improvement District, and Northfield Ecocentre won £50,000 in the Big Lottery's People’s Millions last year to develop Cycle South Brum.
During the campaign, a quirky technique was used by the organisers which involved mystery green Morphs (pictured) popping up around South Birmingham and rumour has it the characters may also be making a reappearance at the launch.
Rebecca Debenham, one of the founders of Cycle South Brum said: “We’re really excited at the way this project is developing and benefits it will bring to our community.
"At the partnership we work with many people who are unable to access employment opportunities due to transport issues.
"They will now be able to have a free bike for six months to get back to work.
"One young person has already been able to take part in a training course thanks to Cycle South Brum bikes, and we haven’t even launched yet!”
Phil Beardmore, Cycle South Brum's newly-appointed project co-ordinator, added: “There is a lot of demand for these bikes and we will soon be getting lots more including children’s bikes, child trailers, child seats and tow along bars. We are arranging lots of bike rides for all ages and abilities to get people cycling, developing their skills and confidence, and having fun.”
“The launch event will be a great opportunity to come and talk to us, tell us how we can help you to get cycling.
"There will be lots of children’s activities, we’ll be making delicious smoothies and I’m told we may also be visited by the notorious green people of Northfield.”
