BROMSGROVE playwright Euan Rose has been awarded an honorary fellowship by Birmingham City University.

And he was in good company when he was presented with the accolade at the Second City's Symphony Hall - ELO frontman Jeff Lynne was also being honoured at the same event, along with Brummie singer-songwriter Laura Mvula.

Euan, who is also the chairman of the Birmingham School of Acting, said: "I was absolutely flabbergasted when it came through the post - I was over the moon.

"They haven't given many of those over the years and it is a super university to be associated with."

Euan's family were with him on the day, including his son Robin who flew in from New Orleans where he was working and his daughter-in-law Rose who came from Mannheim in Germany.

"They were all so proud - it was beyond my wildest dreams," added Euan.

It has been a good year for the playwright so far - his 3 Summers musical opens at the Library of Birmingham Theatre in June and that will hopefully be followed by a six-month pre-West End tour.

And he has a once in a lifetime opportunity for an experienced actor, stand up comedian or singer who can pass for mid-30s to mid-40s, to play the lead male character of Freddie Savage in the 1960s-themed production.
