CHILDREN across Bromsgrove and Droitwich celebrated their love of literature last Thursday (March 6) as special events were held across the two towns for World Book Day.

Youngsters from Lickey End Playgroup's Rising Stars came dressed as their favourite book characters, including Where's Wally and The Gruffalo.

And, during circle time, they discussed and showed their favourite books and talked about the characters in them.

Daniela Davies, from the group, said: "Staff would like to thank the children and their parents for working so hard on their lovely costumes."

At Dodford First School, pupils and staff also dressed as their favourite fictional characters.

A school spokesperson said: "All the children looked amazing and each year group had an overall winner chosen by the staff."

Among the winners were Matthew Bodley as Dr Who, Henry Witherford as The Butterfly Lion, Evie Darlow as Miss Trunchbull, Isobel Hodgkinson as Alice in Wonderland and Hannah Reynolds as The Little Red Hen.

Droitwich Library played host to youngsters from schools across Worcestershire as children enjoyed a talk from children's author Pete Johnson, a special book quiz and a presentation announcing the winner of the key stage two favourite book award.

The Demon Dentist by David Walliams was declared as the winning title which had won the hearts of young book worms across the county.

Jessica Waddington and Poppy Clayton were victors of the competition to rename the accolade as 'Worcestershire's Awesomest Book Award' and were each given a signed book by Pete Johnson and a selection of titles for their school's library.

Dawn Woods, the school library service manager, said: "The children had lovely day - I have been looking back at the photos and they are all looking up at Pete Johnson absolutely riveted."

At Crown Meadow First School in Alvechurch pupils and staff became a 'bunch of Wallies' for the day.

A BUNCH of Wallies took over an Alvechurch school to celebrate World Book Day.

They dressed up as the Where's Wally character to mark the event.

Each year group focused on a particular author or book and took part in reading and writing activties, while those in the older years read to the younger pupils.

As part of the day local author, Sharon Hopwood, also visited the school and children scoured the grounds to find Where's Wally pictures hidden across the site.

Sharon Hopwood said: "I had a super morning helping to celebrate World Book Day.

"The children were wonderfully creative and a real credit to the school."
