RUBERY residents have welcomed the introduction of a new 20mph speed restriction scheme this week.

The pilot project has been rolled out across a number of roads including Callowbrook Lane, The Avenue, Brook Road, Heron Way, Kineton Road, Rochford Close, Richmond Road and Lyndon Road.

Coun Peter McDonald said many residents had been voicing their concerns over the growing number of speeding vehicles for several years.

He added that people had been speeding at 30mph plus and making it hazardous to cross the roads.

“Many mothers with young children suddenly find themselves confronting speeding vehicles when trying to cross the road where they live.

“We need restrictions of 20mph to ensure motorists have time to stop in case a young child runs out onto the road.

“It is hoped such measures will make it safe for all and reduce accidents and near misses - if the pilot is successful it will be rolled out across the county.”

Coun John Smith, who is responsible for highways, said Worcestershire County Council, was pleased to announce the pilot scheme in Rubery was underway.

“As a council we take road safety very seriously and this project will be the first of its kind in Worcestershire.

“If found to be successful there is the potential it could be rolled out to other areas - we will be monitoring the project closely,” he added.
