RESIDENTS from Bromsgrove gathered at St John's Church on Sunday (March 9) for the final service to be given by popular vicar Rev Chris Wingfield, before he moves to Yorkshire.
Rev Wingfield opened the service by talking about the mixed feelings he had and some of his memories, which included a mass Bible reading that took place shortly after his arrival almost five years ago.
He spoke of how he wanted to build the Holy Spirit among his Bromsgrove parishes and about how he was surprised that so many people from all backgrounds turned up for the reading.
At the end of his speech he talked about the Spirit of Bromsgrove awards which were held at Artrix a fortnight ago. They featured winners from the church including the Orchestra of St John's Church and the Street Pastors, which Rev Wingfield himself set up to help those who needed assistance whilst out in Bromsgrove town centre on a Friday night. That has gone from strength to strength since its introduction.
He concluded by blessing Bromsgrove and its people and praying for the town, its residents and its future.
He said when he arrived he wanted to pull the town together and now a big team in Bromsgrove had been built.
"A team that sets the goal and shares the role," he added.
As Rev Wingfield introduced the music to give himself and his fellow lay people the chance to wipe the communion plates and chalices, he joked: 'A hymn to give us time to do some washing up' which produced a chuckle among the congregation.
And members of the St John's Church Sunday School presented him with bunting they had made for him and his wife Thelma to take with them as they journey up north before he closed the service.
The emotional event was followed by a special leaving luncheon held in Rev Wingfield's honour.
