MORE than £400 worth of tools were stolen from a van in Rubery after the thief gained access to the vehicle and rolled it down the road.
The incident, involving the Renault Master white panel van, happened at 3.30am this morning (Monday).
It was parked outside the owner's house in Maple Road and it is believed it was left unlocked.
After getting in, the handbrake was taken off and the van was moved six houses further down the road where it was searched.
The tools taken were a Makita drill and a Makita jigsaw, which were worth £200 each.
The thief was an Asian or black man who was wearing dark clothing and a hat. After the theft, he drove off in a silver estate car which headed towards Whetty Lane.
Officers say they are currently considering whether the incident is linked to two more thefts from vehicles, a few streets away, in Bilberry Drive, Rubery. They happened between last night (Sunday) and this morning (Monday) and saw a Suzuki and a Ssangyong Kyron targeted. They were parked on a driveway, were entered and searched in the same way and a small amount of cash stolen from each car.
Police want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in Rubery in the early hours of this morning.
Witnesses or anyone with any information should call PC Matthew Brittain on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Alternatively, information can be given at the www.crimestoppers-uk.org website.
