A HIKING enthusiast who had a knee replacement at the age of 67 has taken to the hills again, tackling Spain’s mountainous Andalucía region.

Christine Foster, who is from Dodford, Bromsgrove, had her operation at Droitwich Spa’s BMI Hospital last year after injuring her knee while she was on a walking holiday in the summer of 2012.

And, faced with constant pain, sleepless nights and a regular diet of painkillers, she feared she may have to hang up her hiking boots for good.

But, after meeting with orthopaedic consultant Keshav Mathur, she was convinced to have her knee replaced in a bid to vastly improve her quality of life and help her stay fit and healthy.

She said: “After months of being immobile I am now doing the things I love once again – I’m even back out on the golf course.

“I cannot begin to tell you how great it was to be able to walk, pain free and without the aid of a stick.

“At Christmas I even danced for the first time since my injury – something I doubted I would ever do again.

”Whatever your age, if your knees are preventing you from doing the things you want then look at having replacements,” she added.

Mr Mathur said: “With digital radiographs and MRI scanning we can achieve amazing levels of accuracy, both for designing and fitting the new knee.

“This in turn results in less pain and a quicker rehabilitation for the patient.

“Christine, like many other people of her age, went from being fit and active to almost immobile because of a knee injury.

“I’m pleased to see she has her walking boots back on and I hope other sufferers will follow her example and look into the possibility of replacements.”
