THE NEXT phase of Bromsgrove town centre's regeneration scheme begins on Monday (February 17).
Work on giving the High Street an extensive facelift will be carried out as part of the £2million revamp and, while the improvements are being undertaken, Bromsgrove's market will also be temporarily moved.
From tomorrow (Tuesday) the stalls will be set up in and around the front of Asda on Market Street and, possibly extending to Mill Lane.
In order for the project to begin, workers will need to clear off all the market stalls, associated trailers and equipment.
Works started on the street lights at the end of last year but it was stopped during the festive season as the local councils and traders felt it would be better for local businesses if shoppers could browse unhindered.
This latest development is aimed at revitalising the town by adding natural stone and granite paving materials, new lights, small trees and new street furniture.
The aim of the project is to create a unique, striking and welcoming high street.
With the work on the new combined police and fire station nearly finished and the work on the new Library at Parkside due to begin soon, the council says residents should start to notice a real difference.
The transformation will be carried out by the Bromsgrove Regeneration Partnership - made up of Bromsgrove District Council, Worcestershire County Council, Worcestershire Primary Care Trust, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue and West Mercia Police.
Coun Rita Dent, who is responsible for the town centre, said: "The improvement works are really important to Bromsgrove but it is the council’s intention to continue to provide a market in the town whilst they are taking place.
"We hope that as the works are gradually completed that the traders can return to the High Street before the final completion date, estimated at 22 weeks."
Coun Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire County Councillor for Bromsgrove Central, added: "It's an exciting time for Bromsgrove at present with a number of improvements taking place in our town.
"This latest phase will give us a High Street we can all be proud of, ensuring the area is very much 'open for business' and 'moving forward'."
