A FUND-RAISER from Bromsgrove who helped collect £825,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research has received a prestigious award from the charity in celebration of all her efforts.

Nicole Harris was given the special achievement accolade at the Unstoppable Sports Awards for organising the Bromsgrove 5k and 10k running events since 1989. It is those events which have raised the cash.

In 1988, six weeks after her son Marc was diagnosed with leukaemia, Nicole launched the Bromsgrove and District branch of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in 1988 with 17 other people.

Then in March 1989, Nicole became chairman of the branch and it was suggested a local fun run would be an excellent way of raising funds for the charity. Tragically, Marc passed away on April 27 1989 when he was only nine and the first run took place only a few weeks later.

Nicole said many advances in blood cancer research had been made over the past 25 years and it was vital that the fund-raising continued.

“Bromsgrove has become quite a challenging 10k and runners come from all over the country to attend.

"Many people who did the first fun run are still running or marshalling which is very heart-warming.

"I could never give up organising this event as the public is expecting it.

"I’m so glad I can still rely on friends who help me on the day - it’s still hugely rewarding.”

Nicole was presented with her award by former England footballer and blood cancer survivor Geoff Thomas, who lives in Barnt Green.
