A PARTIALLY-sighted Cofton Hackett man pleaded guilty to charges relating to assault and criminal damage at Redditch Magistrates Court on Monday (February 4).
Bruce Wilson, 63, of The Grove, was convicted for criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 and assault by beating.
The court heard how, on September 5 last year, Wilson, who is blind in his right eye, was getting into the passenger side of a car when he almost hit a semi-professional cyclist who was riding past at a high speed.
To avoid a crash, the biker Stephen Titmarsh had to swerve suddenly. Both men then had an abusive verbal exchange.
Wilson got back into the car with his friend while Mr Titmarsh rode to the end of the road and back again.
Mr Titmarsh reached the car just as it was about to pull away and began to bang on the door.
The defence said Wilson got out of the vehicle, worried Mr Titmarsh would damage his friend's car.
He then punched the cyclist once, picked up his £5,000 Scott Addict custom racing bike and threw it, causing £2,600 worth of damage.
The prosecution told the court Mr Titmarsh had suffered a shoulder injury, a cut to his finger, and a cut to his bottom and top lip.
The court heard how both parties had used abusive language and behaviour.
The defence claimed the incident would not have got so far out of hand if Mr Titmarsh had not gone back and provoked Wilson.
But, he added, Wilson accepted the charges and understood he had over-reacted.
The magistrates said they had taken into account his guilty plea but due to the amount of damage caused to
Mr Titmarsh and his bike, the compensation would be large.
The bench ordered Wilson to pay a victim surcharge of £15 and £1,500 in compensation, £1,400 for the damages to the bike and £100 for personal injuries.
Wilson was also given a six-month conditional discharge.
