TWO people have been injured following a motorway smash involving six vehicles near Redditch.

The collision happened just before 6.30am on Friday (February 7) and closed all three lanes of the M42 between Junction 3 and 3a near Redditch on the northbound carriageway.

It involved silver Skoda, white VW, blue BMW, silver Citroen Berlingo, green Jaguar and a grey BMW.

The driver of the Berlingo had to be cut free by firefighter.

Two ambulances and a paramedic officer in a rapid response car were sent to the scene where three people in three separate vehicles were treated.

A man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated for a wrist injury while a woman, also in her 40s, was treated for neck and back pain.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "She was immobilised with the use of a neck collar and spinal board. Both patients were conveyed to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

"A third patient was assessed by ambulance crews at the scene before being released."

Delays of an hour were reported by the Highways Agency and traffic flow was affected all the way back to Junction 6 of the M42.

One frustrated motorist told the Standard: "I got on the M42 at Junction 6 and then I was stuck on the motorway for more than an hour and 40 minutes.

"It was hugely frustrating for everyone stuck in it, just stop start all the way. Bit of a nightmare start to the day."

The road re-opened at 9.36am.
