CASH was stolen last night (Wednesday) after an armed robbery at Farm Foods on New Road in Rubery.
The incident happened at around 9.45pm when three or four masked men burst into the store, one who was carrying a hammer.
The raiders forced staff to open the safe and hand over a quantity of money.
After attacking an employee, they left using the same way they had entered, through a side door, and fled down a secluded alleyway alongside the car park.
The store worker who was attacked, a man, was taken to hospital with a head injury which is not thought to be serious. There were no customers in the store when the robbery took place.
One of the raiders was around 5ft, 9ins tall, chubby and appeared to be Asian. He wore a blue top, black tracksuit bottoms and a black scarf over his face.
Another was of similar height, slimmer, and appeared to be in his 20s. He wore black clothing with a hood and had his face covered. One of the robbers was black and wore a dark blue mask across the lower half of his face.
Police cordoned off the scene while they carried out a forensic examination.
Det Insp Dean Jones of North Worcestershire CID said it was a nasty incident and the robbers were prepared to use violence which made it all the more important that officers traced them quickly.
“We need the public’s help and would urge anyone who was in the area at around that time last night to contact us if they saw anyone making their way to or from the store.
"The robbers may have had a car parked nearby so if you think you saw them getting into a vehicle or know anything at all that may be connected with this then please get in touch.”
Officers want any witnesses or anyone with any information on the incident to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
