THIS YEAR’S Holocaust Memorial Day service, led by Bromsgrove District Council’s Civic Head Coun Helen Jones will take place at 11.30am on Monday (January 27).
The event will be held around the memorial plaque in Sanders Park, featuring pupils from local schools and a bugler from Bromsgrove School.
Coun Jones said: “Every year as a community we mark Holocaust Memorial Day to remember the atrocities of the past and help ensure that they are never repeated.
“This year we will be thinking about the journeys people took during the persecutions brought about in the Holocaust and other genocides.
“I would like to invite everyone to take a step on our journey and join us.”
Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid has joined other Members of Parliament to sign the House of Commons’ Book of Commitment to pledge his support to Holocaust Memorial Day.
In May 2011 Mr Javid and a group of Bromsgrove students visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp which was liberated in 1945.
Holocaust Memorial Day marks that historic event.
Mr Javid said HMD was an important opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocide.
“It is vitally important we both reflect on and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust.
“By keeping it in our thoughts we are reminded to continue to challenge all forms of bigotry.”
And he urged residents to join Bromsgrove’s annual commemorations in Sanders Park on Monday.
Afterwards there will be free refreshments in the park’s bowling green clubhouse.
