A COFTON HACKETT schoolgirl was announced as Newcomer of the Year at the prestigious West Midlands Community Sports Awards ceremony.

Lauren Rowles went up against 32 of the region’s best at the event which was held at Villa Park and was hosted by BBC Midlands Today’s presenters Nick Owen and Mary Rhodes.

The evening included a drinks reception and a special dinner followed by an awards ceremony which was shown on BBC Midlands Today.

Lauren said: “It was a really nice night - I couldn’t believe it when they said my name - I was over the moon.

“I didn’t think I had a chance of getting it when there were so many other amazing people up for it.”
