A BROMSGROVE teenager will be heading to Ghana on a three-month charity placement on Wednesday (January 8).
Oliver Ashmore, 19, will travel more than 3,000 miles to Sandema with three others to help the Local Inclusive Festival project, LIFE project, run by the International Services charity.
As part of his placement, Oliver needed to raise £800 to show his commitment to the cause but he has fallen short by £150 so now needs the help of residents to reach his final target.
So far he has organised a charity waxathon where he waxed most of his hair off, including his eyebrows, and a music gig where his band and a number of others played to help raise £650.
Oliver has been working relentlessly so he can join those working on the LIFE project which promotes equal-ity for those living with disabili-ties in Ghana.
Oliver said the people the organisation helped were excluded from the planning and implementation of many social events, such as the annual Feok Festival.
Oliver’s work with the charity and the community, through research, empowerment, dialogue, public engagement and fund-raising, will help create opportunities for disabled people to participate in social events.
By ensuring those with dis-abilities are treated with the same respect as other members of the community it will also help their day-to-day lives become easier. If successful it is hoped the social inclusion campaign will spread to other towns and vil-lages in the country which have similar issues.
Oliver said: “I’m very excited but a bit nervous at the same time.
“I’m really looking forward to going and helping this worth-while cause.”
Anyone interested in sponsoring Oliver can email firstname.lastname@example.org to help him raise the last bit of money he needs for his trip.
