Concert hoping to raise money for autism help mobile phone app

A CHARITY concert is being performed by Frankley Guitar Club at Bromsgrove’s Artrix at 7.30pm on Sunday (December 8).

The event is being held to help raise funds for a mobile phone app which has been designed to help youngsters with autism spectrum disorders and their families.

That has been created by community psychiatric nurse Andy Flemming, who works for Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

He has come up with the mobile app as a way of helping young people cope more independently with their condition.

If funding can be found for the idea, which is expected to cost tens of thousands of pounds, and a launch proves successful it could be rolled out to cover various aspects of mental health such as depression and self harm

Mr Flemming said: “Our service is about to experience a massive reduction in funding next year, to meet the rising referrals but decrease in funding we were asked to look at any ideas we could to address the gaps in the service.

“One of the things I enjoy doing is psycho-education where people learn about their own condition which helps them to manage it much more effectively.

“There is a lot of information on the internet and a lot of misinformation on there too. People can come away overwhelmed or confused about what their condition is about. It will help patients and families to look after the condition more independently which will mean less pressure on services.

“In terms of stretched resources, this is the way we think healthcare is going to work.”
