A WYTHALL man has narrowly avoided jail after being sentenced for making indecent pictures of children.
Norman Abrahart, 65, of Three Oaks Road, was pleadied guilty to five offences on August 13.
The first was for making 22 level one images of a child and the second related to making 15 level one videos of a child. Both of those occurred between January 1 2012 and July 26 2012.
The third charge was for making 158 level one images on February 27.
And the fourth and fifth offences took place from August 14 2011 to July 26 2012. They related to making 549 level one images of a child and one level three image of a child.
The levels of pictures system used by the courts spans from level one - pictures of erotic poses, but no sexual activity to level five which are much more graphic.
The court heard how Abrahart was arrested on July 26 when police went to his Wythall address.
A computer and mobile phones were seized by officers and sent for forensic analysis.
Images had been downloaded to both the computer and to the phone so, the court heard 'he could look at them later'.
Abrahart was told by magistrates that he came very close to receiving a custodial sentence but that the bench had decided to give him a 36-month community order whereby he would have to undergo a supervised sex offender work programme.
He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge and told he must sign the Sex Offenders' Register for five years.
Magistrates also ordered for the computer and phones to be destroyed.
