A BROMSGROVE cyclist sets off on a 143-mile journey today (Wednesday) to celebrate the completition of a new network of walking and cycling routes across the West Midlands.
Janet Steel, 62, will take part in the Pedal On UK tour, which is organised by the charity Sustrans and backed by the Big Lottery Fund's ‘Keeping the Spirit of 2012 Alive’ campaign. The three-week event aims to recapture the feeling of last year's Olympic and Paralympic torch relays.
During that time, 35 communities using the National Cycle Network will be visited to celebrate the completion of more than 80 cycling and walking routes, which have helped extended the national network. Sustrans is aimed at making everyday journeys by foot, bike or public transport easier so they can be done by more people.
Janet said: “Sustrans routes were my introduction to recreational cycling which keeps me fit and well in retirement.
"Ten years ago a friend and I began going on weekends away, taking our bikes on trains and cycling on Sustrans routes."
Since then she has joined Hopwood Ladies' cycling group and now does longer trips. She also supports the Breeze bike rides for women project and works in local schools with Worcester County Council on the Bikeability scheme.
And she is a volunteer Sustrans Ranger, helping to maintain her local section of the National Cycle Route, from Bromsgrove Station to Droitwich, via Bromsgrove town centre.
