BROMSGROVE'S Asda store has fitted coin mechanisms on all of its trolleys following complaints of dumped shopping carts around the town.
The supermarket giant has responded after two district councillors alerted The Standard to the problem in January.
Coun's Rory Shannon (St Johns) and Chris Bloore (Sidemoor) were so fed up of the issue they went out one afternoon and collected dozens, claiming some had been left discarded for days.
Steve Cooper, deputy store manager at Asda, said: "The vast majority of our customers use our trolleys for the purpose they are intended and leave them with us at the end of their shopping trip.
"We have installed £1 release mechanisms on all our trolleys to encourage customers to return them.
He also urged customers to leave trolleys at the store where they belonged and inform the shop if they spotted a cart 'where it shouldn't be'.
Both councillors commended the move.
Coun Bloore said: "This is a win for local residents.
"After 18 months of working towards this with them I am delighted that Asda has taken this action.
"This step will deter those shoppers who have been leaving their trolleys dotted around the town centre."
Coun Shannon added: "I'm really pleased to see that a big company like Asda has listened, and has acted, it's just a shame it has taken so long.
"It's amazing what a difference it has made already, the surrounding streets are now trolley free."
