YOUNG people, volunteers and staff from Bromsgrove's Basement Project were given the chance to quiz town MP Sajid Javid.

Mr Javid's visit was part of '4ward 2 the Future' - the new programme of Saturday morning opportunities aimed at helping the young people learn new skills, understand their rights and generally create better futures for themselves.

The project, which was started in November, was part-funded by Worcestershire County Council with the support of Coun Anthony Blagg. Subjects already covered have included creating a CV and criminal and family law legal advice.

Among the topics discussed at the latest session with Mr Javid, who is also Economic Secretary to the Treasury, were the fairness and suitability of the New Universal Credit scheme that is part of Prime Minister David Cameron's welfare reforms.

David Morgan, trustee and CEO of the Basement Project, said: "Mr Javid gave the Government’s thinking and logic behind the system and, although there was no final agreement between the MP and those questioning him, everyone present agreed it had been a useful debate."
