Bears shine to overcome Wildcats

BROMSGROVE Bears women’s team secured a 67-51 Division Two home victory against Nottingham Wildcats on Saturday on what was a busy day for the club.

Bears trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter but fought back strongly in the second with 16-year-old Amelia Parchment shining in defence whilst Catrina Yang and Jessica Cooper proved a threat up front.

Carrying a 34-29 lead into the second half, Bears continued to impress, Lucy Allen and Rebecca Taylor proving particularly impressive on the rebound.

They continued to pull away in the fourth quarter until victory was sealed with Cooper (19), Yang (13), Taylor (11) and Allen (11) leading the points scoring.

A STRONG first half performance was not enough to carry the men to victory as they suffered a 66-57 defeat against Loughborough Student Riders 2nds.

Bears opened up a 32-25 advantage in the first two quarters but Riders hit back in the final two to come out on top.

Adrian McLean led the way with 20 points for Bears, receiving good support from Karl Welborn, Hayden Thomas and Chris Coles.

There was better news the following day as the Local League team overcame Orillo BBC 91-55 in West Midlands Division Two.

The win was made all the more impressive by the fact Bears lost against the same opposition earlier in the season.

Ryan Dearne (28), Sam Ramsdale (19) and Ashley Walton (16) were the top points scorers.

THE u15 boys fought hard in their local derby against Birmingham Bulls before falling to a 63-55 defeat.

A productive first half saw Bears lead 30-25 at half time and as a result they went into the second half with confidence.

Bulls came back at them strongly though and with top scorer Liam Healey (11 points) finding himself in foul trouble in the final period, they eventually secured the victory.

THERE was late agony for the u16 girls as they lost 63-58 against Solent Suns in a game they led for the majority of the contest.

Without point guard Shanice turner, Bears opened up a 29-20 lead by half time with England’s Rebecca Turner scoring 17 of those points, eventually going on to claim 30 in the game.

Bears lost a bit of composure in the third quarter and saw Becky Taylor and Elly Duffy get themselves into foul trouble as Solent began fighting back.

A run of three minutes without any points was then to prove costly for Bears as the visitors went on to take victory.
