Rugby Union
Baxter bemoans slow start

BROMSGROVE RFC Head Coach Ross Baxter has pinpointed the early stages of Saturday’s defeat at Doncaster as part of the main reason why his side went on to suffer such a heavy defeat.

With the impressive victory at Stourbridge still fresh in everybody’s minds, the last two weeks have seen Bromsgrove come back down to earth with a bump and Baxter admits it has left everyone at the club feeling a little bit flat.

“We didn’t start well in the first 20 minutes. We needed to start well and put some pressure on them and if we had done that then I am sure they would not have played so well. We basically played into their hands,” he said.

“You could say the packs were even, but the quality they had out wide just gave them the edge all the time. We struggled to hold onto possession when we had it because their work at the breakdown was so good.

“Once they scored the bonus point try they were throwing the ball everywhere and taking risks, so we made a lot tackles but found it really difficult to pin them down.

“After the highs of the Stourbridge game, we are almost as low as it gets after these last two performances. Certainly as a team and a squad we have not had two consecutive performances as poor as that, so what we will be aiming for this week, in terms of training, is to build the team back up again and really pull together and try and work hard to get out of it.

“We do not have a good record against Luctonians, so we will need all the team spirit, work rate and commitment we had against Stourbridge to help move us forward.”
