A MAN and a woman found dead in a flat in Frankley were discovered by the nine-year old girl living there, the police have confirmed.
Officers said the deaths of the couple in their 30s, who are known locally as John and Susan, were unexplained, but added they were treating it as a murder inquiry because of the circumstances.
The girl dialled 999 and called an ambulance to the Miranda Close home just before 10am when she woke up and found the pair unconscious.
The woman, believed to be the girl's mother, was found lying on a mattress on the floor of the bedroom while the man, thought to be the girl's stepfather, was seated in a chair in the lounge.
Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service arrived shortly after and pronounced both dead at the scene.
Det Ch Insp Wayne Jones from West Midlands Police said there were 'no obvious signs of trauma' and investigators were keeping open-minded about the causes of death.
"At the moment the deaths are unexplained but we are treating and staffing it as a murder inquiry until we know any different.
"We are looking at all options, and wouldn't discount anything."
DCI Jones added there was no evidence to suggest a drug-related death.
A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow (Saturday) at 9am with more answers around the cause of death expected later in the day.
Police have cordoned off the area and are continuing with inquiries including carrying out background checks and trying to trace the relatives of the man and woman.
The girl was taken to hospital as a precaution and given the all clear. She is currently staying with her grandparents.
Anyone with any information on the incident or the couple involved should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
