Bromsgrove fail to build on victory

Bromsgrove 3 Leicester Lions 30

SHOWING just three changes from the great win of seven days earlier, Bromsgrove failed to achieve anything like the same level of intensity and commitment that saw them overcome Stourbridge as they were well beaten by a good Lions side on Saturday.

From the outset the visitors showed more determination and control, and throughout the first half won a string of penalties as Bromsgrove were deemed to have breached nearly every law in the game.

As a result of holding on, off-side, obstruction and handling in the ruck, Lions had kickable penalties, three of which were converted by Jonathon Boden.

Eventually the referee decided he had seen enough and issued the home side's Kevin Salisbury with a yellow card.

As a result this put even more pressure on the home forwards, who were already under the cosh, and when the scrum broke up close to the home line, the ref awarded a penalty try which Boden converted.

This gave the visitors a 16-0 lead at the break and the only positive that Bromsgrove could glean from the performance was that they did not have their line breached in open play.

That situation did not last long when winger James Stokes went over for a simple try thanks to some soft home defending.

A couple of players for the hosts did seem up for the challenge despite the scoreboard not reading in their favour, in particular Steve Blackburn, but even his best was not bringing sufficient rewards.

Richard Mahony's penalty did get them on the scoreboard but overall Leicester were too strong and completed the scoring through Tom Morris' 65th minute try.

BROMSGROVE play the inaugural match at Darlington Mowden Park's new 20,000 seater stadium on Saturday so there should be plenty of seats available for fans able to make the journey.
