SPORTING got 2013 off to the best possible start with a comfortable success over Pilkington on New Year's Day.

The Victoria Ground outfit did well to get the game on given the recent spell of wet weather and ultimately proved to be the only game in the division to take place on the day.

A bright start from the hosts saw Chris Conway head over in the sixth minute whilst Nick Harris saw his effort blocked three minutes later.

Andy Nicol then fired inches wide as the pressure continued to grow on the Pilkington goal before the visitors threatened for the first time when Kyle Turner saw his glancing header turned round the post by Tom Savage.

Conner Leek then thought he should have had a penalty when bundled over in the box but the referee said no and Sporting made the most of their escape by taking an 18th minute lead through Nicol's header after good work from Harris.

Excellent defending from Danny Deehan prevented a Pilkington equaliser when hooking the ball off the line after Turner had beaten the keeper but that proved to be the visitors last real threat on goal.

Sporting scored a timely second five minutes before the break with James Turk scoring on the rebound after his initial effort had been blocked by Leach.

Derek Wilkes' own goal started the second half scoring 15 minutes in when he turned home Conway's centre and Sporting went further clear when Turk crossed for Nash to fire into the roof of the net.

Chris Morison made it five with two minutes of normal time left when he poked home Jovan Blake-Walker's cross after the pacy youngster had carried the ball forward from his own half.

Joint manager Keith Draper said he was pleased not just with the result but also the performance. Both the defence and midfield had remained solid despite a number of enforced changes to the line-up, passing had been good, the ball had not been given away and a number of good chances had been created.

Top of the table Sporting will look to build on this success when travelling to sixth placed Stafford Town tomorrow (3pm). The Reserves, who are searching for a 17th successive victory, entertain Atherstone Town at the Victoria Ground (2pm).

IN DIVISION One, Fairfield Villa and Droitwich Spa continued to be frustrated by the weather as their games on Saturday and New Year's Day were all washed away.

They will try again tomorrow with Villa travelling to Knowle (2pm) and Spa heading to FC Glades Sporting (2pm).
