FAIRFIELD Villa moved joint top of the Midland Combination Division One table thanks to Saturday’s 5-2 victory at local rivals Droitwich Spa.
A sensational first half performance from Paul Oakes’ men saw them storm into a 5-0 lead before Spa pulled a couple back after the break.
The victory continues Villa’s excellent run of form which has seen them win their last six games in all competitions to leave them in confident mood ahead of tomorrow’s Worcestershire Junior Cup second round home clash against Division Two outfit Inkberrow.
Villa could have been forgiven for being slightly downhearted going into Saturday’s match having lost influential duo Andy Nicol and Martin Slevin but they showed no signs of feeling sorry for themselves in a stunning first 45 minutes.
Scott Gaffney and Stuart Hall linked brilliantly together up front and it was the latter who fed Pete Jenvey to open the scoring.
Hall turned provider again for the second goal which captain Steve Frost converted with a fine left foot strike before Gaffney’s fine chip made it 3-0.
Fairfield looked hungry for more goals and they went further clear when Hall fed Keiron Evans to convert before the striker got the goal his play deserved after Evans returned the favour.
Their was one downside for Villa when new goalkeeper James Burrows fell awkwardly and was forced out of the action early with a broken metatarsal, Frost replaced him between the sticks.
The second half saw Spa come more into the game and they pulled one back through Ben Brogan before seeing the first of two strong penalty shouts turned down.
Brogan grabbed a second as Spa continued to grow in stature but Villa had already done more than enough to pick up all three points as they went level with Hampton at the top.
