KIND hearted members at Droitwich Tennis Club have collected equipment to help support one of their former members who now lives in the Philippines and is trying to help local impoverished children take up the sport.
Bryan Wrenn, who was a member at Droitwich for many years before moving to the Philippines two years ago, now plays at the GSIS Heights Club in Davao and is trying to encourage youngsters to take up the sport.
“The kids love playing tennis but there is no way they can afford the equipment and often play in bare feet with just a couple of rackets between them," he said.
Whilst back in the UK recently, Bryan mentioned what he was doing and members at the club were very keen to help, as Neil Bates explained.
"Many of us have old rackets sat in cupboards that we don’t use any more so it seemed a great idea to collect these up and send them to a place where they could be used and enjoyed.”
Members at the club soon collected over a dozen rackets, shoes, pumps, socks and some tennis clothing which ended up being too much for Bryan to take back with him. As such, it was subsequently boxed up and freighted out to the club in Davao.
“It is absolutely superb," Bryan said.
"I can’t thank the guys at Droitwich enough for what they have done. The kids love the kit that was collected and it has made a massive difference to them.”
