RESIDENTS in Bromsgrove are being warned to be on their guard against a man who has been approaching people, claiming to be an undercover police officer.
He was white, 5ft 7ins tall and of stocky or large build. He had a round face and short dark hair.
He drove up to a group in Lyttleton Avenue, Charford, in a red Peugeot 206 at around 9pm on Wednesday (January 2).
After saying he was working undercover, he spoke about an incident which he claimed had happened in the town earlier that evening that had been covered by another police officer.
The man then, after being told none of the group knew anything about it, moved on to talk to other people and then drove off towards Humphrey Avenue.
Sgt Justin Taylor, of Bromsgrove Police, said the force had no knowledge of the incident the man spoke of and did not believe he was a police officer.
"Clearly impersonating a police officer is an offence, but we don't know what this man's intentions were.
"No attempt was made to get anyone into his car," he added.
He appealed for anyone who was approached by the man or knew who he was to contact him on 101.
He added an undercover police officer would always produce his identity card which should be checked carefully.
Anyone unsure of whether a police officer is genuine or not should call 101 to verify what they have been told.
