Drainage work begins at Bromsgrove RFC

WORK to improve the popular sports pitches at Bromsgrove RFC’s Finstall Road started this week.

The first phase of work involves carrying out primary land drainage works for the club’s new drainage system which will improve drainage for three of the four regularly waterlogged pitches.

Trenches will be created, into which 150mm diameter perforated pipes and filters will be installed.

The pitches will remain open for as long as possible throughout the winter season but will close in 2013 to enable the on-pitch work to take place. The project is expected to complete in spring 2013, and be fully operational for the 2013/14 season.

The £107,000 project is being funded by self-generated finance from club members and through grants form organisations including Sport England, Queen Elizabeth II Sports Field Challenge and The Veolia Environmental Trust, who awarded a grant of £30,000 through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Bromsgrove RFC is a not-for-profit organisation that has four sports pitches, which are used regularly by a wide variety of groups throughout the year, with the majority using them throughout the winter season. The pitches are in high demand and the high volume of use, combined with poor weather, can cause extensive damage and deterioration.

This project will sustain the quality of the pitches with the installation of the primary drainage system that will enable water to drain away, reducing the amount damage that can be caused.

When complete it is expected that there will be an increase in the amount of games that can be played on them.

Bromsgrove RFC Chairman John Blackhall said: “It is fantastic to see this project starting. When it completes next year it will vastly improve the quality of the pitches and enable more matches to take place.”

The Veolia Environmental Trust’s Executive Director, McNabb Laurie, added: “It is always great to see the start of a project we have been able to support through the Landfill Communities Fund. I look forward to seeing the works completed and the improved pitches being enjoyed by all.”
