AN INQUEST into the Bromsgrove man who was found dead in the old town cemetery has ruled he took his own life.
Andrew Michael Carter, from Charford, was found on August 20 next to a tree in the Church Lane graveyard.
The 45-year-old dad-of-two, left notes to friends and family, as well as a general letter found behind a drainpipe in the churchyard.
The court heard how, days before he was found, Mr Carter had stayed with his friend Kevin Smith, who had known him for more than 30 years.
Mr Smith said: "Andrew said he needed somewhere to put his head down for a few days.
"He seemed normal, he mentioned he was a bit upset over his girlfriend."
The pair spent all day together on August 19, watching cricket on TV before Andrew left at 7pm carrying a small bag.
"He said he was going up the pub to see a few mates." added Mr Smith.
Andrew's mum was present with other family members to hear the verdict.
Mrs Carter said, in the months leading up to her son's death, they had spoken on the phone and exchanged text messages.
She said Andrew had become very withdrawn after learning his ex-wife had become pregnant and his current girlfriend had announced she was moving to Dubai with her sister.
Mrs Carter added he had stopped taking medication which he had required on a daily basis since suffering a severe operation three years ago which had stopped him working as a building labourer.
"It totally threw him and he went within himself. I asked him several times if he was taking his medication. He said: 'don't worry ma' I'm fine'.
"You just knew he wasn't taking it. I knew he was in a bad place, but I didn't know how bad he was," added Mrs Carter.
Finally, she told the court how she learnt her son and his girlfriend had split up and that Andrew had flown to Dubai to try and convince her to come back.
Mrs Carter said he sent her a text after she tried to contact him saying 'my head is shot to pieces'.
"I wanted to know where he was, and where he was going to stay and if he needed any money.
"I just knew something was wrong."
The assistant deputy coroner, Kate Thomas, recorded the verdict that Mr Carter died after hanging himself from a tree Bromsgrove Old Cemetery.
