Hockey
Positives in defeat

DROITWICH Hockey Club 2nds walked off the pitch with their heads held high despite falling to a 2-0 at Bloxwich 2nds.

They produced a spirited performance in dreadful conditions that bodes well for the future and will aim to repeat the display tomorrow when they host Bromsgrove at Droitwich Leisure Centre (1.30pm).

Droitwich made the better start and created the first chance of the game when Pete Best found Luke Wicks in the D but he was unable to get his shot on target from an acute angle.

David Mills then fell foul of the blood rule and had to leave the field for 15 minutes after being struck in the face by the ball and it was during that period that Bloxwich got themselves on top with man of the match Cameron Grant having to make a number of excellent saves.

Two goals before half time put them in control and despite Droitwich battling hard in the second half, they were unable to get themselves back into the game.

THE 3rds bounced back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory against top of the table Khalsa.

Having controlled the opening exchanges, it came as something of a surprise to Droitwich when they fell behind to a goal from a short corner.

They were solid defensively from that point on though with Alistair Littlejohn, Pete Sankey and Nathan Stanmore shining at the back.

Spa still trailed at the break but some rallying words from captain Alex Robinson ensured they came out fighting in the second half.

Liam Hine made it 1-1 when smashing home from a short corner and he quickly grabbed a second in similar circumstances.

Droitwich then held on for the final ten minutes to leave them buoyant and confident of climbing the table in the coming weeks.

MAN of the match Adam Townsend was on target to give the 4ths a 1-1 draw at Warwick 7ths.

There was lots of good attacking hockey played throughout the contest with Spa setting the pace and dominating the majority of possession.

Warwick went ahead midway through the first half when a scrappy shot crossed the line but Droitwich continued to cause problems.

The deservedly drew level 20 minutes into the second half when Townsend scored from a short corner after being fed by Wayne Plumpton with what proved to be the final goal of the game.
