ALMOST 50 delegates gathered in Bromsgrove for a special weekend dedicated to town poet AE Housman.

The event, organised by the Housman Society, took place in Housman Hall, the poet's former family home which is now Bromsgrove School's sixth-form boarding house.

The weekend featured a series of talks and a recital at Artrix, in conjunction with Bromsgrove Concerts. That saw the complete A Shropshire Lad performed to music and accompanied by images from Ludlow Photographer Gareth Thomas.

James Rutherford was the singer, with Simon Lepper on the piano.

A spokesperson for the Housman Society said: "He delivered both the song and poetry with profound understanding."

The sessions with the guest speakers featured a variety of topics, including Victorian Pessimism, an A to Z of AEH, Housman at Cambridge and a reading from star poet Wendy Cope under the title of her poem 'I think I am in love with AE Housman'.

The weekend was concluded by Julian Hunt who spoke about Housman's 'dodgy family escapades'. They included bankruptcies and elopements and the story of how the Housman family came to Bromsgrove.

"For the 48 hours that delegates soaked up minutiae about AE Housman and his family, they were fortified by five star quality meals from Bromsgrove School’s catering team," added the spokesperson.
