Water scheme sees Lickey End youngsters roll out the barrel

YOUNGSTERS from Lickey End First School raised £446 which will go towards supplying poor areas with fresh water.

The children collected the cash after taking part in the Roll Out the Barrel scheme organised by the Rotary Club of North Worcestershire.

They were challenged by Rotarians Roy Rowlands and John Mackay to see how many words they could make out 'Roll Out the Barrel' - a task they were sponsored for.

The project sees rolling barrels supplied to mothers and children in Africa and Asia, who have to collect water from wells a distance from their homes.

The pupils' efforts will see 15 barrels provided to families who need them.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Normally they would carry water in containers on their head or back which causes young bodies to suffer under the weight and strain of carrying such large quantities of water.

"By giving them a rolling barrel, not only could they move more water, but could travel quicker thus taking some of the drudgery out of this essential task."
