THERE are sure to be plenty of raised spirits after a town pub, said to be haunted, has re-opened its doors.
Ye Olde Black Cross, Worcester Road, which has been shut since January, is now open again under the tenancy of landlord Simon Harrison.
The grade II listed building, built in 1640, was once an old court house where convicts were imprisoned in the cellar and hung out the back where the new lounge and beer garden are.
Legend has it the spectre of a royalist soldier walks between the lounge and the bar along a passageway.
Also, according to the history books, King Charles II stopped off to get his horse re-shoed at the garage at the back of the pub as he fled to France at the end of the English Civil War in 1651.
It also still has a 26ft deep well in the lounge.
And Mr Harrison also has his own little bit of history with the Black Cross - 17 years ago he drew up a business plan centred around the pub as he was getting in to the trade.
“I have lived in Bromsgrove all my life and used to drink in this pub when I was 18. I already know some of the regulars.
“It’s the pub I have always wanted - it has just taken a bit of time.”
He added he and his family wanted to put the pub back at the heart of the community.
The pub will stock real ales and there will be a variety of entertainment on Saturday nights and a free juke box on Fridays.
The Black Cross will also become home to two Sunday league football teams, darts and pool teams and in a few weeks time will have its bed and breakfast service up and running.
Bromsgrove Civic Head, Coun Janice Boswell, went along to perform the official opening.
She said: “I am so excited about what’s going to happen in the town, and this is the start of it.
“It is a new era of business and the people of Bromsgrove need them as much as they need us.”
