Tributes paid to Bromsgrove cyclist who died after crash

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Bromsgrove cyclist who was injured in a crash in Droitwich last Friday (August 10) and died in hospital.

The incident, involving 18-year-old Anthony Phillips, happened on the A38, outside the Chateau Impney Hotel, at around 3.25pm.

It is believed the former North Bromsgrove High School student was riding his BMX on the pavement, away from Droitwich, when a Kia Picanto appeared to mount the path and collide with the teenager.

He received medical attention at the scene and was then airlifted to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, but died the following day.

Following the tragedy, flowers and a picture of Anthony were left at the scene and an R.I.P Anthony Phillips group was set up on Facebook.

Tributes to the popular mobile DJ flooded the page, with many expressing their shock and sadness that he had been 'taken too soon', while others described him as having a heart of gold and someone who would have done anything for anyone.

Becka Weston wrote: "R.I.P Anthony, you will be truly missed but always remembered."

Samantha Hurdman posted: "You touched the hearts of everyone you met and will be missed by all that knew you.

"DJ and party hard up there with the other angels."

Sammie Spriggs stated: "You had an amazing personality that no one will ever forget!"

And Phil Eves said: "I was fortunate to work with Anthony for a couple of years, one of the nicest lads I have had the pleasure of knowing.

"I cannot get my head around the fact that he has been taken so early."

PC Leon Westwood, from West Mercia Police, who is investigating the incident, said: "Our thoughts are with this young man's family and friends at this sad time."

He appealed for any witnesses or anyone who saw the bike or Picanto in the moments before the collision to call him on 0300 333 3000.

A police spokesperson confirmed a woman in her 50s from Tenbury Wells was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving in connection with the incident. She has since been released on police bail while officers continue their inquiries.
