MORE than £1,200 was raised for Acorns Children’s Hospice by regulars at a Bromsgrove pub who took to their classic bikes for ‘The Retro Run’ nine-mile cycle ride.
The 46 from The Nailers Arms in Bournheath, including owners Phil and Shula Witherford, cruised through the streets on a selection of bikes from the 1970s and 80s, such as Raleigh Choppers, Burners and Grifters.
They travelled from The Nailers Arms to The Queens in Belbroughton, via the recently reopened Dodford Inn, where landlord Sam Davis put on food for the fund-raisers.
The ride was inspired by Sid Griffin and Darren Latin-Smith who one day decided to ride their retro bikes to the pub.
Sid said: “After that day, it quickly caught on and lots of people started buying retro bikes to join in, and it turned into a cycle for charity.
“Children’s causes are close to our hearts which is why we are raising funds for Acorns – a great charity that does a lot for local life-limited children.”
Acorns’ community fund-raising manager Carole Crowe said: “It’s great to see how much this event has grown since its spontaneous beginning and we’re grateful to be the chosen recipient for the funds raised this year.”
