A NUMBER of Bromsgrove & Redditch Athletic Club juniors attended the Worcester Young Athletes Open meeting at Nunnery Wood on July 8 to test themselves against athletes from other clubs which included Cheltenham, Hereford, Cardiff, Sparkhill and Halesowen.
There were medals for the top three athletes in each event as well as the meet providing a good opportunity to attain new personal best records.
The first event really did display Bromsgrove & Redditch at their best as Lewis Byng not only won his U11 75m race in a PB of 10.7s but also clocked the fastest time of all 22 athletes taking part in the four races the competition was split into.
In the girls U11 75m Buffy Pinnegar claimed second in 11.8s and Sophie Payne, making her debut for B&R, finished fourth in a time of 12.7.
Joshua Pearson took another first place for the club competing in the U13 boys 100m as he finished in 13.7s. In the girls competition Kate Hunter took fourth place in a PB of 15.7.
U15 athlete Andrew Pearson achieved a PB of 12.7 in the 100m when he took second place to Worcester. He then went on to win the 200m with another PB of 26.0s.
Whilst the U15 girls 800m race only attracted one athlete who represented Worcester, the U13 girls 800m saw 21 athletes split over two races and B&R were represented by Olivia Worth, who finished fifth with a PB of 2.47.0.
In the field events Joshua Pearson jumped a PB of 1.25m in the high jump to claim second in the U13 boys category and Kate Hunter took fifth with a PB of 1.15m.
The long jump saw Joshua Pearson finish second out of ten athletes with a jump of 4.03 in the U13 competition and Lewis Byng placed second out of 19 entrants in the U11 long jump with 3.77.
In the girls U11 long jump 20 athletes competed, with Buffy Pinnegar jumping 3.27 which placed her sixth. Sophie Payne jumped 2.33 for 19th spot.
In the girls U13 competition 28 athletes took on the long jump and Chloe Payne, who has only recently joined B&R, took joint tenth place with a jump of 3.38m.
Olivia Worth was 12th with a PB of 3.36m and Kate Hunter finished 25th with 2.87m.
Having finished top of the McCain Young Athletes' League Division (Midlands 1C) last month and given the results from the Worcester Open, B&R athletes are in good shape and looking forward to the second fixture in Heart of England League Division Two in Kettering tomorrow (Saturday).
