Bromsgrove man jailed for breaching violence order

A BROMSGROVE man has been jailed for 23 weeks for assault and breaching a Domestic Violence Prevention Order (DVPO) which was put in place to protect his ex-partner from him.

Duncan Read, 51, from Catshill, was handed the sentence when he appeared before Redditch Magistrates Court.

He admitted assaulting his ex-partner and criminal damage to property at her home on April 14.

The 17 weeks Read was given for the assault were added to the six-week sentence he was handed on April 16 by Redditch Magistrates for the breach of the order. Police applied for the DVPO, which was issued at Redditch Magistrates Court on April 2, after being concerned about the victim.

It prohibits Read from using violence, attending a designated address and intimidating or having direct contact with the victim.

The decision to jail him was welcomed by Det Insp Vikki Reay from West Mercia Police's Public Protection Unit, which is based at Bromsgrove.

She said: "The court's decision to give a custodial sentence for a breach of the order sends a clear message to victims that their concerns are taken seriously and a message to offenders that they must respect the decision of the court when a DVPO is issued.

"I hope victims of domestic violence will see this and it will encourage them to report abuse in the home, to the police or to Independent Domestic Violence Advocates, so we can work together to address this insidious crime.

"The Domestic Violence Prevention Order in this case demonstrates the need for some protective measures for those victims of domestic abuse in addition to the criminal justice process."

And she said victims often, given the cycle of abuse they had been subjected to, saw going through the criminal justice process as too daunting.

But, she added, the DVPO was an effective tool in supporting police action by removing the abuser from the home and allowing the victim the breathing space necessary to get the help and support they needed.
