CHRISI Conway netted five times as Bromsgrove Sporting ran riot at Midland Combination Division One basement boys Phoenix United on Saturday, eventually running out 11-2 winners.
Boss Keith Draper warned his players of the potential banana skin they faced before the game but he need not have worried as the hosts proved the architects of their own downfall in the early stages, conceding two penalties within the first seven minutes. Conway and Joe Brookes duly converted.
With Phoenix attempting top regain their composure and Sporting smelling blood, Karl Fellows increased the lead to three just four minutes later with an angled strike from 20-yards that keeper Sean Burrell initially held before fumbling it into his own net.
Phoenix’s head were down by this stage and Sporting had little difficulty in scoring four more before the break thanks to two strikes from Dan Wilkes, one from Aaron Roberts and Conway’s second.
The hosts did give themselves something to shout about before half time though when captain Justin Blake ran through Sporting’s back four and fired a low drive underneath keeper Tom Savage.
Sporting, who travel to Shirley Town tomorrow, were soon back on the front foot at the start of the second half and Conway added two more to his tally before substitute Robbie Hendry also got in on the act.
James Azamghari headed home his side’s second of the match from a 70th minute corner but the Rouslers were not finished and with seven minutes remaining, the lively and skilful Keith Draper made a good run down the right and unleashed a fierce shot that keeper Sean Burrell could only parry into the path of Conway to tap home the final goal of the game.
On another day Sporting could have had another half dozen against a Phoenix side who will clearly be glad to see the end of the season.
