DROITWICH Dolphins picked up a fantastic victory in the third round of the Worcester Winter League on Sunday.
Dolphins overcame Bromsgrove, Haden Hill, Orion and Ludlow at Droitwich Leisure Centre as throughout the 40 races they secured 14 wins and a staggering 31 top three places.
Individual wins went to Ruth Hadley (3), Ben Gallant (2), Anthony Redfern (2), George Bates (2) and Sam Cave.
The 15-years medley and freestyle relay teams of Ruth Hadley, Anthony Redfern, Sam Cave, Aaron Biddle, Callum Turner, Rachel Bradley and Niamh Harding won both of their events, as did the 13-years medley and freestyle teams of Aaron Biddle, Callum Turner, Joe Essery, Lauren Rogers, Teri Woodhouse and Juliet Mourino.
It was a busy weekend for the Dolphins with the junior section travelling to Stafford on Saturday to compete in the first round of the Nuneaton District Junior League.
For several swimmers it was their first ever external gala and everyone competed extremely well, finishing in a close fourth place behind Cannock Phoenix, Northgate and Hinckley.
Individual wins were secured by Teri Woodhouse in the 12 and under backstroke, Claire Humphries in the 12 and under breaststroke, Jess Biddle in the ten and under backstroke and Matthew Richards in the nine and under backstroke.
The boys nine and under freestyle relay team of Richards, Joseph Mourino, Ross Clews and George Grech finished first, as did the girls 12 and under freestyle and medley relay teams where Woodhouse and Humphries were joined by Alex Scott and Juliet Mourino.
Second places were achieved by Tom Dean in the 12 and under butterfly and breaststroke, James Clews in the 11 and under backstroke, Chris Osborne in the 11 and under butterfly and breaststroke, Juliet Mourino in the 12 and under freestyle, George Bates in the 12 and under freestyle, Joshua Bennett in the ten and under backstroke, Maisy Nicholas in the nine and under backstroke, the nine and under boys medley relay of Sam Ford, R Clews, Richards and J Mourino and the boys ten and under medley relay team of Bennett, Jack Scott, Fraser Burgess and Will Bishop.
OVER several weekends a total of 19 Droitwich Dolphin swimmers have competed in the Worcester County Championships.
Following last year’s achievements the team carried on their good form, bringing home 30 medals, 66 top six places, 17 club records and over 75 personal bests.
Ruth Hadley (14) became girls age group champion in the 50m butterfly and 100 IM and also picked up four silvers (50m and 100m backstroke and breaststroke) and two bronze. In the process, she also broke 14 club records and achieved five Midlands regional qualifying times.
To put the icing on the cake, she secured a place in the 100IM County Championship final, an incredible achievement considering her age. She swam a brilliant race and secured a bronze medal and became the fastest Junior in the 100IM at this year’s championship.
Aaron Biddle and Joe Essery both swam very well during the championships. Biddle (13) secured one gold (800m freestyle), five silvers and one bronze in his age group whilst Essery swam to silver in the 800m freestyle and got an incredible seven bronze medals in the 12-year-olds age group as well as swimming PBs in all his 12 races despite suffering an injury.
There were bronze medals for Anthony Redfern (15) in the 100m freestyle and backstroke, Thomas Dean (12) 800m and 1500m freestyle and Sam Cave (14) in the 800m freestyle.
Redfern followed Hadley in securing a place in the 100m backstroke championship final and swam a great race coming home in fifth place.
Tim Quiney, 12, just missed out on the medals, but swam a very good championship, achieving 11 PBs out of his 12 swims.
George Bates, Rachel Bradley, Sam Dorgan, Anna Dowty, Ben Gallant, Claire Humphries, Chris Jenkinson, Adam McConnell, Elle Mortimer, Matthew Redfern, Lauren Rogers, Sam Rose and Callam Turner all did the Dolphins proud and swam excellent races adding to the total number of top six places and the number of PBs achieved.
