Evesham Hospital Cup Semi-Final

TWO goals from Robbie Hendry helped Bromsgrove Sporting secure their place in the final of the Evesham Hospital Cup with victory over local rivals Droitwich on Saturday.

Sporting went into the game with a semi-final defeat fresh in their mind having lost against Boldmere in the Smedley Crooke Trophy seven days earlier, but they made amends on Saturday to set up a final clash with Littleton, which will be played at Littleton on May 19.

Chrisi Conway failed a pre-match fitness test for the home side so Joe Brookes returned to the starting line-up but manager Keith Draper chose to play him deep with Robbie Hendy and Dan Wilkes up front.

Sporting shaded possession in the first half but Droitwich worked hard and defended well to keep them at bay.

Kevin Banner looked assured on the left wing for the Rouslers and he delivered a number of good crosses which Hendry and Brookes attempted to convert, only to find goalkeeper Nick West in excellent form for the visitors.

The Rouslers upped the tempo in the second half and went ahead in the 58th minute when Hendry slotted home following a goalmouth scramble.

The lively striker then doubled the advantage four minutes later with a fine strike that gave West no chance.

Spa were not prepared to lie down and concede just yet though and they pulled one back in the 65th minute when Chris Thurbon was on hand to convert after Stu James' initial shot came back off the bar.

The two-goal cushion was restored in the 71st minute though when Dan Wilkes bagged his first goal of the season with an angled shot from ten-yards.

Sporting, who return to Midland Combination Division One action with a trip to Phoenix United on Saturday, shored up their defence from that point and denied Droitwich the opportunity to set up a frantic finale.
