Spa bid to end home campaign on a high

DROITWICH Spa host Stretton Eagles in their final home game of the Midland Combination Division One season tomorrow (3pm) and boss Richard Goode is hoping they can sign off in style.

Spa have picked up 17 of their 22 points at home in a disappointing season and will be hoping to improve that tally by three tomorrow before they travel to Blackwood and Lichfield City for their final two games of the season.

Goode, who saw his side draw 1-1 at bottom of the table Northfield on Saturday, said he is in positive mood ahead of tomorrow and hopes his players are too.

“I’ve been really pleased with the lads in the last couple of games and hopefully they will produce another good display tomorrow,” he said.

“Our home form hasn’t been too bad this season and it would be nice to end with a win.

“I’m as positive as I have been all season going into the game but am aware at the same time Stretton will not make life easy for us.”

Stu James gave Droitwich a first half lead at Northfield after good work from Roger Denby and Ben Brogan but Northfield grabbed a share of the spoils when scrambling home from a corner with five minutes left.

There was still time for Spa to go close to grabbing a dramatic winner but Mike Seeley’s effort with the last kick of the game was pushed onto the bar by the keeper before hitting the post and bouncing to safety.

“I asked for a big performance out of the players because of how badly we performed against them in the home game, and I got it.” Goode said.

“It was very disappointing to concede late on and I still don’t know now how that chance didn’t go in at the end.

“We were very good in the first half but had to deal with a change of approach from Northfield in the second half and I think we proved we are not a soft touch.

“We stood up to the battle well with Liam Jaunty impressing in particular after stepping up from the reserves.

“I was also pleased for Stu James getting the goal because he’s worked tremendously hard up front on his own at times this year and he was well rewarded on Saturday.”
