BROMSGROVE Sporting will head to Alvis in buoyant mood tomorrow (3pm) following their crushing 5-0 Midland Combination Division One defeat of Blackwood on Saturday.
Blackwood remain in pole position to claim the league title, sitting seven points off leaders Littleton with five games in hand in second place, but Sporting, who now sit third some five points behind Blackwood having played three games more, produced an awesome display to condemn them to a heavy defeat at the Victoria Ground.
The afternoon could have followed a very different path though had Blackwood converted one of three decent chances that came their way in the first 20 minutes.
Jacob Snape scuffed two shots wide, failing to test Tom Savage in Sporting’s goal, before Steve Bell should have done better that fire wide of the left hand post.
Gradually Sporting took control of midfield with James Turk in particular threading some decent passes through to his forwards who bit by bit were beginning to stretch Blackwood’s defence.
The tactic paid dividends in the 34th minute when Jon Rogers smashed home from eight-yards to become the club’s all-time top scorer.
Chris Conway doubled the lead four minutes later with a candidate for goal of the season when he saw visiting keeper Richard Mills off his line and blasted home superbly from 20-yards.
Blackwood were thrown a lifeline at the start of the second half but Danny Hemmings’ effort bounced to safety off the post.
Sporting put the game to bed on the hour when Keith J Draper scored a great solo effort after working his way past a couple of defenders before coolly slotting past Mills.
Mike Thurbon’s first goal for the club made it 4-0 following a goalmouth scramble before Robbie Hendry completed the scoring with six minutes left.
A SUCCESSFUL day for the club was completed by the Reserves securing a 4-0 Midland Combination Reserve Division Two victory at Coton Green.
JJ Evans made it 1-0 when powering home Harry Blood’s corner and Luke Whitehouse scored twice before the break to make it 3-0 and reach 15 goals for the season.
Substitute Simon Phillips completed the scoring in the second half with an unstoppable volley from a corner as Sporting eased to a deserved victory.
