Leaders defeat Bears

BROMSGROVE Bears Basketball Club’s u16 girls got a busy week of action underway when facing top of the table Hertfordshire.

Bears held on to Hertforshire’s tails for the first three quarters and trailed by 15 points going into the fourth.

Problems began to arise for the home side though when two of the starting five fouled out early in the fourth quarter and the leaders powered clear to win 92-42.

The women were next in action against The RAF and they secured a 68-49 victory.

Bears carried a ten-point lead into the second quarter and they maintained their advantage throughout with Jessica Cooper and Catrina Yang returning 22 points, Dawn Hall weighed in with nine.

The u16s were then back in action against third placed Northants and after a hard battle were edged out 51-45.

Bears were disappointed to see Northants adopt a zone defence, with coach Carys Hall saying: “This type of defence does not let the girls at this level or age group show their individual or team skill in basketball and to have to play against a zone defence for 40 minutes shows that the other team just cannot compete with our girls on a one-to-one level.”

The top scorers for Bears were Amelia Parchment and Catrina Yang with 12 points and Becky Taylor with ten points.

Finally the Local League Women’s team took to the court and recorded wins over Shropshire and West Midlands Police.

Cooper top scored with 26 points as Shropshire were beaten 92-53 whilst the Police were beaten by nearly 30 points.

The u16 girls entertain Bucks Hornets on Saturday (12pm) at South Bromsgrove High School and all support will be greatly welcomed.
